Mrs. Mary Cook Walters, 97, retired employee of R. C. May Jewelers and longtime resident of Brookside Drive, died Sunday, March 17, 2013 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 1:30 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Ezell Rose and Rev. David Buffalo officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Monday from 4:00 -8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Wayne County native was the daughter of the late Thomas Hassell Cook and Clara Moore Cook. She was married to Raymond Walters who preceded her in death on January 30, 1972. Mr. & Mrs. Walters owned and operated Walters Grocery in Columbia for several years. She was a member of Riverview Baptist Church. Survivors include one son, Larry Walters of Columbia; granddaughter, Tracy Wilkins of Tullahoma; great grandchildren, Krystal Jones of Omaha, Nebraska, Brooke Lee and Ashley Lee, both of Tullahoma; special nephew, Mark Cook of Muscle Shoals, Alabama; and special niece, Gail Ledford of Columbia; brothers-in-law, Billy (Peggy) Walters and Leon (Mildred) Walters, both of Columbia; Kelly Strickland of Nashville; sisters-in-law, Sarah Stanfill and Marie Walters, both of Columbia; dear friends, Carol Sellers, Karen Demastus, and Faye Hartsfield, all of Columbia; and several other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister, Kathleen Cook and two brothers, Thomas Cook and Jack Cook. Active pallbearers will be Mark Cook, Greg Walters, Buster Walters, Mike Walters, Randy Stanfill, Alan Faulkner, and Jerry Norman. Honorary pallbearers will be Deacons of Riverview Baptist Church.
