Matthew Charles (Chew) Heier, 24, died March 23, 2007 in Portland, Oregon. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at St. Catherine Catholic Church with Father Davis Chackaleckel as Celebrant. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Friday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols. A native of Williamsport, Pennsylvania, his family moved to Columbia and became actively involved in numerous church and community activities. "Chew" was a a member of the Columbia Central High School football team for four years, Track & Field team, served on the Student Council and served as Student Body Vice-President. He was elected "Most Popular" of the graduating Class of 2001. He was a graduate of Teen Leadership Maury and was a Teen Leader for the Maury County YMCA. He was a communicant of St. Catherine Catholic Church and was active in the Catholic Youth Organization. He attended Columbia State Community College, Hi-Tech Massage Therapy School in Nashville, and Pellissippi State in Knoxville. Survivors include his mother, Barbara Jean Hopkins Heier and father, Steven James Heier of Columbia; two sisters, Kristen Heier (Jared) Mach of Charlottesville, Virginia and Beth Heier of Columbia; a brother, Jonathan Heier of Columbia; special friend, Amanda Kaufman of Portland, Oregon; paternal grandparents, Helen and James Heier of Vernon Hills, Illinois; aunts, Cathy Hopkins (Norman) Mattson of Erie, Pennsylvania; Darlene Heier (George) Rairigh of Elyria, Ohio, and Diana Heier (Scott) Barnett of Chicago, Illinois; uncles, Robert "Bo" (Penny) Hopkins of Erie, Pennsylvania and Richard (Patty) Heier of Avon Lake, Ohio; great-aunt, Mary Evelyn Hopkins of Honolulu, Hawaii; great-uncle, George P. Heier of Kansas City, Missouri. He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Ethel and Dr. Robert Charles Hopkins of Erie, Pennsylvania.
