Burial will follow in Rosemount Cemetery. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Memorials may be made to Rosemount Cemetery c/o Leslie Oliver P.O. Box 1924 Columbia, Tennessee 38402. Born on March 25, 1962, he was the son of the late Samuel Melvin Scales and the late Willie Bell Taylor Hodge. Melvin attended Page High School in Williamson County and was formerly employed by the Impact Center. Growing up his nickname was Weatherman, and to his last day he would tell anyone within earshot the weather forecast. The Mount Pleasant community nicknamed him the Preacher. Melvin was loved by his community, but nothing matched Melvin’s love of the Lord. Any conversation with Melvin was likely to include the weather forecast and a sermon, and he was regularly heard singing by his downtown neighbors. Melvin did not seek celebrity, but he became one in his community. A special thanks to all of those in the community who gave Melvin a helping hand over the years. Survivors include his son, LaShawn Webster of Columbia; half sisters, Elaine Hodge and Tammy Hodge of Nashville; special caregivers, Renea Foster and Debbie Gray, several aunts, and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Luther Preston Hodge. Pallbearers will be Carlos Hodge, Larry Crawford, Dennis Hodge, James Marshall, Greg Hanners, Frank Bellamy, Bill Handy, Chaz Molder and Dalton Mounger.
