View Video Tribute View Funeral Webcast Melvin Landy Bennett, 79, retired from Coca-Cola Company and resident of Columbia, died Monday, August 22, 2022 at Life Care Center of Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 11:00 A.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Reverend Steve Swango officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 3:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born April 25, 1943 in Maury County, he was the son of the late Herbert Bennett and the late Bulah Prutt Bennett. Having never met a stranger, Mr. Bennet was loved by all who knew him. He was known as the lawnmower man. Survivors include his wife, whom he married October 2, 1965, Carolyn Gibson Bennett; sister, Pauline (Doris) Watson; sister-in-law, Kay Howell; several nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, great great nieces, and great great nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Lester Bennett, Chester Bennett, Elden Bennett; and sister, Christine Poe. Family and friends will serve as active pallbearers. The family would like to express a special thanks to Kay Howell for all the love and care she has shown to Mr. Bennett over the years.
