Mrs. Mildred Warden Hammond, 83, long-time resident of Sharon Circle, died Thursday, January 3, 2008 at Life Care Center. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 1:30 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Bob Adair officiating. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery. Born in the Culleoka Community, she was the daughter of the late William Hugh Warden and Pearl Gardner Warden. She spent her early years in the Culleoka and Glendale communities and graduated from Culleoka High School. After graduation, she worked as an operator for Southern Bell Telephone Company. She was married August 29, 1952 to Thomas Vernon "Pop" Hammond. Mr. Hammond died April 25, 2004. She retired from the telephone company after 10 years service to begin rearing her family. Mrs. Hammond was a former member of Highland Park Baptist Church and in recent years a member of Northside Baptist Church. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed sewing. Survivors include her daughter, Julia Hammond (Steve) Manley of Columbia; sons, Thomas Rickey "Rick" Hammond of Columbia and James Warden "Jim" (Lisa) Hammond of Columbia; sister, Helen Warden (Dudley, Jr.) Hardaway of Columbia; brother, William Charles Warden of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Jeremy Matthew Hammond, Roland Stephen Manley, Redford Hammond Manley, Helen Grace Hammond, and Gretta Synclair Hammond.
