View Video TributeMr. Arthur Eugene "Gene" Caruthers, 92, retired journeyman electrician and resident of Trotwood Avenue, died Sunday, February 20, 2011 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 1p.m. Tuesday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Gary Wedgewood officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Monday from 4 - 7 p.m. followed by a Masonic service beginning at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. The Maury County native was the son of the late Michael Conrad Caruthers and Cora E. Snyder Caruthers. On November 29, 1941 he married Ella Daphine Herston Caruthers of Columbia who survives him. Mr. Caruthers was a graduate of Columbia Central High School and attended two years of business college. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a member of Columbia Masonic Lodge No 31, Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19, Eastern Star and Local Union No 429. Mr. Caruthers was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church. In addition to his wife of 69 years, Mr. Caruthers is survived by two daughters, Janice Faye Hight of Columbia, Edna Marie (Emmett) Webb of Brentwood; son, Michael Eugene (Claudia) Caruthers of Millington; nine grandchildren, Kim (Harry) Nace of Chapel Hill, Karen McTigrit, Christopher (Carey) Hight, Kevin (Paige) Hight all of Columbia, Michael Eugene (Suzanne) Caruthers, Jr. of Knoxville, Sally Caruthers of Truckee, California, Natalie (Tommy) Henley of Eagleville, Stephanie Webb of Brentwood, Ashley Webb of Columbia; sixteen great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Roy H. Caruthers and Charles E. Caruthers. Pallbearers will be Christopher Hight, Kevin Hight, Michael Eugene Caruthers, Jr., Tommy Henley, Harry Nace and Ronald Sneed. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Local Union No 429 and members of the Fellowship Sunday School Class at Riverside United Methodist Church.
