Mr. Austin Slaughter, 89, former employee of the Maury County Highway Department and resident of Sunset Lane, died Tuesday, January 15, 2008 at Maury Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with James Dickey officiating. Burial will be in Oakley Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 4 - 6 p.m. and Friday from 12 - 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Hickman County native was the son of the late Wheeler Slaughter and Sarah Ann Scott Slaughter. Early in his career he worked as a truck driver for Farmers Construction Company then later worked for the Maury County Highway Department. Mr. Slaughter was a member of the Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife of 70 years, Clara Malugin Slaughter of Columbia; son, Freddy (Sharon) Slaughter of the Bryant Station Community; two grandsons, Sam (Lisa) Slaughter of Culleoka, Cody Slaughter of Bryant Station; two great-grandchildren, Sara Ann Slaughter and Eli Slaughter both of Culleoka; three sisters, Jewell (B.J.) Layne and Inis (Clyde) Foster both of Nashville and Irma (Alfred) Pagel of Columbia; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, David Murphy Slaughter, grandson, Joseph Dean Slaughter, brother, Robert C. Slaughter and two sisters, Neva Slaughter Williams and Bertha Slaughter Gordon. Pallbearers will be Sam Slaughter, Cody Slaughter, Daniel Rotoni, Roger Rotoni, Kim Layne and John Wayne Williams. Honorary pallbearers will be nephews and great-nephews.
