Mrs. Winnie Elise Childress Stansell, 90, resident of Sunshine Assisted Living in Woodhaven, Michigan, died Sunday, September 19, 2004 at Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital in Wyandotte, Michigan. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Larry McGranahan officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Water Valley native was born February 7, 1914, the second child of the late John Henry Childress and Lucille Vestel Childress. She attended Water Valley Schools and went on to become a hairdresser at Mrs. Donoho's. In 1937 she married Dudley Stansell who preceded her in death in 1981. She and her husband moved to the Detroit, Michigan area during World War II where they worked at the Willow Run bomber plant, she as a "Rosie the Riveter". The couple settled in Wayne, Michigan and she continued working as a barber and hairdresser until they retired to Port Orange, Florida in the 1970's. She attended the Methodist Church. She is survived by her daughter, Donna (Joseph) Abramczyk of Trenton, Michigan; granddaughter, Christy (Douglas) Stallings of Trenton, MI; grandson, Thomas (Jennifer) Abramczyk of West Bloomfield, Michigan; four great-grandchildren, Kyle Stallings, Haley Stallings, Julia Abramczyk, Emma Abramczyk; two nieces Dolores (Phillip) Meissner of Columbia, Frances Wiley of Williamsport; and many grand-nephews and grand-nieces. She was preceded in death by her brother and sister-in-law, Hobert and Josie Lee Childress. Pallbearers will be nephews and cousins: Larry Wiley, Dennis Wiley, Steve Wiley, Jess Wiley, Bill Fly and Jerry Fly.
