Nancy Witherspoon Thompson

Nancy Witherspoon Thompson, 86, retired Maury County Court Clerk and resident of Bear Creek Pike, died Sunday, June 11, 2017, at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 4:00 P.M. at Pleasant Heights Baptist Church with Rev. Mike Dawson officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 2:00 - 4:00 P.M. at the church. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements. Born February 14, 1931, in Maury County, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Robert Witherspoon and the late Georgia Kraus Witherspoon. Her loving and dedicated husband Rayburn G. Thompson preceded her in death June 26, 1996; and she is now free from captivity to join him again. She was a 1949 graduate of Columbia Central High School and attended Columbia Business College. A lifelong public servant, Mrs. Thompson's career in the County Court Clerk Office spanned over forty years, first as Deputy Clerk under the direction of Roy Pogue and Raymond Due. In 1978 she was elected as County Court Clerk and continued to serve in that capacity until her retirement in 2014. Very civic minded, she spent many hours doing volunteer work with the Columbia Jaycettes, American Legion Auxiliary, Maury Historical Society, and Maury County Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Thompson enjoyed working in her yard, fishing, and playing cards with the Muletown Rookies. She was a member of Pleasant Heights Baptist Church. Survivors include her daughter, Jan Binkley of Spring Hill; grandchildren, Adam Bay Binkley, Eric Haze Binkley, Justin Smalley, Brent Smalley; great grandchildren, Tillman Bay Binkley, Julianna Smalley, A. J. Smalley, Lexi Davis, Cameron Smalley, Tyler Smalley, Trey Smalley; and special friend and longtime hairdresser, Lucy Church. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Rosemarie Smalley; sister, Virginia Gibson; brothers, Robert K. Witherspoon, Kenneth "Toots" Witherspoon, Paul Witherspoon; and special friend, Eva Christine Pointer. Pallbearers will be Adam Bay Binkley, Eric Haze Binkley, Blair Binkley, Brent Smalley, A. J. Smalley, and Walt Robinson.
