View Funeral WebcastMr. Newton Lafayette Emerson, 67, resident of 6th Avenue, died Monday, February 9, 2009 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Craig Vaughan and Mike Coupe officiating. Burial will be in Santa Fe Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 4 - 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Place of Hope, 105 N. James M. Campbell Blvd., Columbia, TN 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the son of the late Newton Lafayette Emerson and Theresa Harris Tripp. He was a 1959 graduate and valedictorian of Marathon High School in Florida and a 1963 graduate of The University of Tennessee in Knoxville with a B.S. degree in liberal arts. He was a First Lieutenant in the Courier Service of the U.S. Army. Mr. Emerson was retired from the Federal Aviation Agency and Department of the Navy as a labor relations specialist. He was currently employed by H&R Block as a tax preparation specialist. Survivors include five cousins, Constance Wheatley of Sevierville, Craig Vaughan and Chloe Shear both of Columbia, Doug McKibbon of Etowah and Tony McKibbon of Lynnville. He was preceded in death by two aunts, Vivian McKibbon and Doris Vaughan. Pallbearers will be Craig Vaughan, Ben Vaughan, Branden Vaughan, Beau Vaughan, Larry Nickell, Lukas Fowler and Tony McKibbon. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Alcoholic Anonymous, and residents and staff of Place of Hope.
