Mrs. Norma Kirk Whiteside, 83, long-time resident of 4th Avenue, died Wednesday, June 18, 2008 at Maury Regional Hospital. The family will visit with friends Saturday from 10:00 a.m to 12:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols concluding with a memorial service at 12:00 p.m. Dr. Bill Williamson and Mr. Dennis Satterfield officiating. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, P. O. Box 1864, Columbia, 38402 or a charity of choice. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. Born in Florence, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late Lonnie Edward Kirk and Cora Schrader Kirk. Her family moved to Columbia where she was a 1943 graduate of Columbia Central High School. She was a member of Central Christian Church, was involved in the Christian Women's Fellowship, and taught Sunday School for many years. She was an avid bridge player, and also as an avid golfer, Mrs. Whiteside was a long-time former member of Stoneybrook Ladies Golf Association, Graymere Country Club and the Graymere Ladies Golf Association. Beloved, wife, mother, and grandmother, she is survived by her husband of 61 years, A. Burton Whiteside of Columbia; sons, Mike Whiteside of Columbia and Kirk Whiteside of Helena, Arkansas; a sister, Joan Kirk Brown (Gene) Aydelotte of Columbia; grandsons, Michael Burton (Wendi) Whiteside, Jr., Jonathon Ryan (Traci) Whiteside, and Jeffrey Benjamin (Ashley) Whiteside, all of Columbia; great-grandchildren, McKenzie Whiteside and Taylor Whiteside; nieces and nephews, Becky Brown Davis, Pete Brown, Sherry Maddux Shouse, Zeke Maddux, Billy Salrin, and Larry Kirk; sister-in-law, Sarah Stroud Kirk and Ralph Maddux of Columbia. She was preceded in death by sisters, Margaret Kirk Maddux and Dot Kirk Salrin and brothers, Raymond Kirk and Mahlon Kirk. Mrs. Whiteside's family extends deepest gratitude to Dr. Gibran Naddy, the caring, professional staff of NHC Home Health, and special appreciation to her care-givers, Ella Anderson, Ann Church, Sue Hawkins, and Gloria Stanfill.
