View Funeral Webcast Peggy Ann Smith Rector, 82, resident of Columbia, died Thursday, February 27, 2020 at her residence. Funeral services will be conducted 2:00 p.m. Sunday at Graymere Church of Christ with John Vaughan officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends from 4:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Saturday and 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the church. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements. Born November 3, 1937 in Nashville, she was the daughter of the late Herman Hampton Smith and the late Julious Bonnie Holloway Smith. She was a graduate of Donelson High School in Donelson, Tennessee. On August 3, 1956, she married Ponder Cloyce Rector who preceded her in death on November 22, 1998. Early in life, she worked at Dixie Manufacturing and later retired from Holland’s Pharmacy. She was a recipient of the Long Rifle Award by the Boy Scouts as a den mother, the first traffic crossing guard for Maury County Schools, and worked for the Maury County Election Commission. Mrs. Rector had a witty sense of humor and was very involved in her children and grandchildren’s lives and activities. She was a member of the Graymere Church of Christ, where she did benevolent work with the Senior Adult Program where she helped organize meals for the bereaved families and the minister’s camp. She is survived by her daughter, Paula Rector (J.W.) Gilliam of Columbia; sons, Phil (Charlotte) Rector of Columbia, Keith (Cindy) Rector of Columbia, and Perry Lynn (Angie) Rector of Columbia; grandchildren, Rachel Gilliam (Byran) Farris, Jesse (Hayley) Gilliam, Evan (Amanda) Rector, Alex (Emily) Rector, Chad (Holly) Rector, Nicki (Brian) Goldman, Todd (Hiliary) Rector, Amanda Rector (Kyle) Clayton, and Dalton (Savannah) Rector; 13 great grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Susan Byrd Rector of Columbia; sister-in-law, Kitty Smith Gividen of Louisville, KY; special friends, Knoxie Goad, Frances Compton, Nell Gilliam, Shelia Butt, and Brenda McClure. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Dr. P. Laray Rector; sisters, Becky Startup and Naomi Mullen; brothers, David Smith and Jerry Smith. Active pallbearers will be Jesse Gilliam, Todd Rector, Evan Rector, Alex Rector, Chad Rector, Dalton Rector, Byran Farris, and Kyle Clayton. Honorary pallbearers will include members of the Graymere Church of Christ Senior Adult Program.
