Peggy Adwell Porter

October 10, 1928 — April 1, 2008

Peggy Adwell Porter, 79, passed from this life as a result of cancer Tuesday, April 1, 2008 surrounded by her husband, all her children, and grandchildren. Peggy was born in Birmingham, Alabama, the daughter of the late Mary Crawford and Edgar E. Adwell. She moved to Columbia when she was a child and lived there until last year, when she moved to Nashville to be closer to family during her illness. Peggy is known throughout Maury County as the founder and long-time proprietor of Ye Peddler Gift Shoppe. She first opened Ye Peddler in 1971, originally located in the James K. Polk Sisters' House. Within two short years, she moved the business to its current location at 307 West 8th Street, where it became a leader in the gift and bridal business throughout Maury County. In 1992, Peggy sold Ye Peddler, and the business continues to serve the community. She was an active member in the First Presbyterian Church where she also served as an elder. Peggy is survived by Ray Porter, her husband of 59 years; her sister, Bettye Adwell Howard of Charleston, South Carolina; two sons, Ed Porter (Ran Ying) of Beppu, Japan and Tom Porter (Deb) of Malibu, California; and a daughter, Patricia Thomas (Al) of Nashville. She was blessed with six grandchildren, Michael and Patrick (Tira) of Honolulu, Hawaii, Ron of Beppu, Japan, Trevor of Huntington Beach, California, Mary of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Cate of Nashville. Peggy had just recently learned of her first great grandchild, Edgar Adwell Porter II, expected to be born in July 2008. She was preceded in death by a sister, Dorothy Adwell Craige of Columbia. The family will visit with friends Thursday, April 3, 2008 from_11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols following by a private graveside service at Polk Memorial Gardens with Dr. Bill Williamson officiating. The family wishes to express special thanks to Mary Gibson and all the support from Alive Hospice of Nashville, as well as appreciation to Marge Lancaster of Columbia. Honoring Peggy's wishes, the family requests memorials be made to the "Peggy Porter Living Waters Fund" administered by the First Presbyterian Church, 801 South High Street, Columbia 38401, or Alive Hospice of Nashville, 1718 Patterson Street, Nashville 37203.
