R.E. Duncan Jr., 84, former resident of Duck River TN, passed away on August 14, 2024 at NHC Maury Transitional Care after an extended illness.

A memorial service will be conducted Sunday, August 18, 2024 at 3:00 p.m. at Oakes and Nichols Funeral Home with Judge Bobby Sands officiating. The family will visit with friends beginning at 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Born August 2, 1940 in Hampshire TN he was the son of the late R.E. Duncan Sr. And the late Alice Josephine Morrow Duncan. He graduated from Columbia Central High school in May of 1958 and enlisted in the U.S. Air Force on Oct 2, 1958 proudly serving his country until 0ct 1. 1962 when he was honorably discharged with the rank of Airman First Class.

R.E. began working for L &N Railroad in April of 1963 and retired in 1997. He was a long-standing member of The Columbia Elks Lodge, as well as, a longtime member of the Hampshire Masonic Lodge 192 both of which he considered a great honor. He was also a member of The Shop where he enjoyed visiting with friends. R.E. had a great love of airplanes and obtained his private pilot’s license many years ago after learning at Hunter’s Field, he took great pride in being one of the oldest licensed pilots in Maury County. R.E. cherished his family and was especially proud of his grandchildren.

Survivors include his daughter Sandy (Jeff) McLain of Columbia, granddaughter Hallie McLain, grandson Dylan McLain, brother Donald Duncan, several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by siblings Ray Duncan, Joe Duncan, Ronald Duncan, Dorothy Armstrong, Sue Hurt, Bobbie Harmon, Betsy Ann Goodwin and Jackie Dugger

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the NHC Maury Transitional Care staff who loved and treated him like family and to his special Wednesday Lunch Crew friends.
