R. French Chapman, 81, retired general superintendent for General Contractors, died Saturday, May 17, 2008 at his residence on the Hampshire Pike. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols. A time of family remembrances will begin at 7:00 p.m. followed by Masonic Rites conducted by Columbia Masonic Lodge #31. Graveside services will be conducted Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. at Dobbins Cemetery in Lawrence County with military honors at graveside provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. Army during World War II and was a member of the American Legion. Mr. Chapman was a member of Graymere Church of Christ, Mimosa Masonic Lodge in Lawrenceburg, and was active in the Maury County Democratic Party. He was married February 28, 1962 to the former Beverly Jean Tidwell who preceded him in death April 17, 2006. Survivors include a daughter, Debbie Lynn Chapman (Patrick Jason) Matthews of Columbia; a son, Jacson French Chapman of Columbia; a sister, Geraldine Evans of Lawrenceburg; a brother, Tucker Chapman of Portland, Oregon; several nieces and nephews.He was preceded in death by two sisters, Gelaine Chapman Hunt and Alice Ann Chapman. Active pallbearers are James Barr, Travis Jones, Tom Bowman, Jim Evans, Joe Evans, Pete Ridley, Joe Cathey, and Thomas Cathey. Honorary pallbearers include Al Ingram, Buford Springer, Brice Thomas, Diane Fink, and Betsy Barr.
