Rachel Elizabeth Foster Garrett, 97, retired employee of Pinkston Nursery School and resident of Golf Club Lane, died Monday, May 15, 2017 at NHC Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday at 10:30 A.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Mike Greene, Sherrie Mitchner, Mike Kesler, and Jeremy Butt, Rachel's self-appointed grandson, officiating. Burial will follow in Pleasant Mount Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 4:00 - 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Born April 28, 1920 in Parish Branch Hollow, Old Lynnville, Giles County, Tennessee, she was the youngest and only daughter of five children, to the late John Dew Foster and the late Lillie Mae Thurman Foster. On September 28, 1938, she married Robert Denham Garrett who preceded her in death August 11, 2001. Together they started housekeeping living with her brother, Brown and Velma Foster on Galloway Street. Rachel and Robert both worked at Dixie Manufacturing and attended Old South Church of Christ, Highland Avenue Church of Christ and West 7th Street Church of Christ. Mrs. Garrett will most be remembered from Bible classes at Highland Park Church of Christ and Alma Pinkston's Day Care on 15th Street, where she loved teaching and being with children. She was a member of Maury Regional Hospital Auxiliary for 29 years and the Maury County Bird Watchers. She will also be remembered as a perfect mother-in-law. Survivors include her two sons, Randy Denham (Linda Baker) Garrett of Franklin; Ray Foster (Linda Wallace) Garrett of Columbia; grandsons, Robert "Caleb" (Rachel Brown) Garrett of Columbia; Luke Nathaniel (Amber Hinson) Garrett of Auburn, Alabama; nieces, Evelyn Winnette Foster Coston of Irving, Texas; and Mary Ellen (Ellis) Logan of Wetumpka, Alabama; and several nieces and nephews.In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by brothers, Willie Brown Foster, Albert Mason Foster, Raymond "Ellis" Foster, and Johnny Douglas Foster; nephew, William Sloan (JoAnn) Foster; and niece, June Foster Savage. Active pallbearers will be David Foster, Joe Foster, Gwynn Savage, Dwight Savage, Raymond Wallace, and Mike Kesler. Honorary pallbearers include The Raymond Wallace & Mike Greene Families, Joe Sam Savage, The Shoney's Ladies, God's Special Angels; Roseanna Appleton, Rachel's self-appointed granddaughter, Pat Hill, and Dorothy Jean Witherow, words can simply never express the emotional comfort and extra special actions you've shown Rachel over the years.
