Mr. Rayburn Charles "Charlie" Barker, 86, retired teacher and principal, died on Memorial Day, Monday, May 26, 2008 at his residence on Danbury Dr. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Emily Barker, Richard Van Cleve and Dwain Brown officiating. Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday in Rock Springs Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 4 - 8 p.m. and Wednesday from 1 - 2 p.m. at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the son of the late C.U. Barker and Annie Hardison Barker. He was a 1939 graduate of Central High School and graduated from Middle Tennessee State University. On September 15, 1947 he married Mary Lynn Barker of Columbia who survives him. Mr. Barker served in the United States Army Air Corp during World War II. He taught school at Woodrow and Spring Hill and served for 46 years as deacon at Rock Springs Baptist Church. In addition to his wife survivors include two daughters, Emily Barker (Ray Anderson) and Susan (Terry) Hill both of Columbia; one brother, Clyde (Joyce) Barker of San Antonio, TX; three grandsons, Nathan Hill, Joseph Hill, Peter Hill; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, Charles Barker. Pallbearers will be sons-in-law, grandsons and nephews. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Rock Springs Baptist Church, Dr. Ben G. High, Dr. Andy Woodard, Dr. Moataz Toban, and Dr. James H. Marshall. Thanks to caregivers and staff of CVS Pharmacy Northside and all service providers.
