Mr. Reuben Curtis Riggins, 80, retired employee of Union Carbide, died Thursday, July 9, 2009 at his residence on Overton Drive. Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 P.M. Sunday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Military honors will be provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19 following the service at Oakes & Nichols. Burial will be in Aspen Hill Cemetery in Giles County. The family will visit with friends Saturday from 5:00 - 9:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Mr. Riggins was born in Maury County on December 27, 1928, the son of the late Jesse David Riggins and Maud Turpin Riggins, and moved to Giles County in 1934 as a youth with his family. On March 6, 1951, he married Peggy Ann Harrison Riggins who preceded him in death on December 17, 1997. Mr. Riggins played baseball as a youth and loved to bowl and golf. He could fix or build anything he set his mind to do. He loved to grow tomatoes and other vegetables and fruits which he shared with numerous family, neighbors and friends. He was a good Dad and PawPaw to his three children, five grandchildren, two step grandchildren, and his fifteen great grandchildren. He served in the United States Army in the last Horse Cavalry at Fort Riley, Kansas from December 1946 to December 1947, taking basic training at Fort Knox, Kentucky and Stoneman, California. He was a member of Craft Memorial United Methodist Church. Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth (Bob) Morgan of Columbia; Debbie (Reddick) Scott of Santa Fe; one son, Anthony Riggins (Dr. Lee Hambrick) of Oakland, California; five grandchildren, Wendy Morgan (Kevin) Twit of Nashville; Bobby (Sonja) Morgan of Spring Hill; Kim (Bill Bob) West and Kelly (Tol) Swindell, both of Lebanon; Kami Harvey of Columbia; two brothers, Johnnie (Lavelle) Riggins of Columbia; Jimmy Riggins of Pulaski; brother-in-law, Thomas Knight Harrison, Jr. of San Diego, California; two step grandchildren, Mallori (Charley) Plunkett of Columbia; Dayton Scott of Santa Fe; fifteen great grandchildren, Cooper Twit, Isaac Twit, Amelia Twit, Cade Morgan, Grant Morgan, Rhett Morgan, Bayley West, Kennedy West, Landry West, Brody West, Trace Harvey, Kruiz Harvey, Kanyon Harvey, Tol Swindell, Yates Swindell; and special friends, Michelle Oliver, Hillary Oliver, Sandra Oliver, Lockie Risner, and Judy Campbell. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Hickman and Katherine Harwell; three brothers, Jesse Riggins, Leroy Riggins, and James S. Riggins. Pallbearers will be Dayton Scott, Alan Tate, Joe Bishop, Jerry Dodson, Kevin Foster, Wayne Jones, Mike Hickman, Stanley Harwell, Alan Underwood, Chad Riggins, and Arlen Dodge. Honorary pallbearers will be co-workers at Union Carbide, Bobby Harris, Sr., James Cammuse, Junior Reese, Carl Melton, Casey Jones, Roy Hickman, John William Pigg, and residents of Overton Drive.
