View Video Tribute View Funeral Webcast On Resurrection Sunday, April 21, 2019, Rev. Charles E. Blythe, beloved and long-time pastor of First Assembly of God in Columbia, Tennessee, entered his heavenly home. Brother Blythe was born in Memphis on January 9, 1949, to Rev. Earl and Ruby Nell (Webb) Blythe. In 1970 he graduated with honors from Central Bible College in Springfield, Missouri, traveled the country as an evangelist with his wife, Joy, and then accepted the invitation to shepherd First Assembly of God in 1974. He would remain there for 37 years, also serving as an Assemblies of God presbyter for three decades, before retiring in 2012. After that, he began his own business, Elegantly Cleaned, through which he worked as an interior painter and cleaner, capable handyman, and installer of tile and hardwood flooring. Charles was a hard worker, rarely content to sit still. Brother Blythe loved the Lord Jesus and preaching the Bible. He adored animals—particularly his Bichon Frise named Romeo—and would even allow his succession of lap dogs to muss his otherwise perfect hair. He was proud of his “girls”: his wife, Joy, and daughters, Bethany and Deborah. And he was deeply patriotic, a friend to local officials and to the community. During his tenure, the church hosted many Celebrate America events specifically geared to ministering to servicemen and city and county leaders. They became a well-loved part of the July holiday. Pastor Blythe was artistic, organized, enjoyed rollercoasters, liked to travel and see historic sites, and had a passion for making his yard look like a well-kempt garden. Those who knew him best will never forget his dry, quick wit. He will be deeply missed. Charles was preceded in death by his infant brother, David, his mother, Ruby Nell, and his father, Earl Blythe, as well as by his cherished grandmother, Elizabeth Webb, and a host of dear friends. He is survived by his wife, Joy, his children, Bethany (Jon) McShurley and Deborah (Terry) Cain, and four grandkids: Skyler, Aidan, Tristan, and Isabella, as well as his beloved sister-in-law, Judy M. Bryant of Colorado. All who loved Charles are invited to attend his Life and Ministry Celebration on Saturday, April 27, 2019, at The Pentecostals of Columbia, 955 Baker Road, Columbia, Tennessee at 2:00 pm. Charles requested all Tennessee ministers to be his honorary pallbearers. Flowers may be sent to Oakes and Nichols Funeral Home in Columbia, where a visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. on April 26, 2019.
