Rev Emily Kathleen Barker

Rev. Emily Kathleen Barker, 66, resident of Old Hwy. 99, died Wednesday, November 5, 2014 at Maury Regional Medical Center. A memorial service will be conducted Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Mt. Pleasant First Presbyterian Church with Rev. Jeff Kane officiating. The family will visit with friends Friday from 4:30 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family suggests memorials to American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 1864, Columbia, TN 38402 or the charity of your choice. Condolences may be offered online at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Maury County native was the daughter of Mary Lynn Barker and the late Rayburn Charles Barker and was a 1966 graduate of Columbia Central High School. She did her undergraduate studies in math and science at UT Knoxville and earned her Master's Degree in Divinity from Vanderbilt University. She taught math and science at Central High School, Whitthorne and Spring Hill for several years. In 1982 she was ordained at Westminster Presbyterian Church and started her ministry in Laurenburg, South Carolina and served churches in South Carolina, Georgia, North Carolina and Tennessee. For the past twenty years she has served as minister at Mt. Pleasant First Presbyterian Church. She was active in the organization of Alive Hospice serving as both a Hospice Chaplain and a teacher for other clergy wishing to serve in Hospice. In addition to her mother, survivors include her husband, Elvis Ray Anderson of Columbia whom she married July 30, 1997; sister, Susan Barker (Terry) Hill of Columbia; nephews, Nathan Hill, Joseph Hill and Peter Hill; two very dear friends, Wilmoth Foreman and Bonnie Bowman; and several members of the Barker and Lynn families. She was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Barker on January 6, 1978. The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dr. Houston Jameson, III and the staff at Columbia Oncology; to Dr. Michael Sattasiri and the radiology staff at Maury Regional Medical Center; to the congregation of Mt. Pleasant First Presbyterian Church for their loving care and encouragement during her illness; and to a special friend, Angela Hardison.
