MR. RICHARD BLOCKERMr. James Richard Blocker, Sr., 77, long-time resident of Bailey Street, died Wednesday, March 12, 2003, at his residence following a short battle with cancer. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at 2:30 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Joe Macer officiating. Burial will be in Morrow Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Thursday from 1:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. He was a 1943 graduate of Hampshire High School. He served in the United States Army during World War II, receiving a purple heart for injuries received in the Battle of the Bulge. After a brief employment with TVA, Mr. Blocker retired in 1991 after thirty-seven years employment with Union Carbide. He served as an Elder at South Point Church of Christ for the past twenty-three years and also served on the Board of Directors for both the Morrow Cemetery Association and the Sheboss Cemetery Association.Survivors include his wife of over fifty-five years, Faye Carroll Blocker of Columbia; one daughter, Linda (Tommy) Dunn of Columbia; two sons, James Richard "Pete" (Shirlene) Blocker, Jr. of Old Hickory, Alvin (Darleina) Blocker of Columbia; two brothers, Willis and Willard Blocker both of Hampshire; two sisters, Clarice Bradley of Columbia, Virginia Clay of River Rouge, Michigan; two sisters-in-law, Norma Kelley, Mary Allie Blocker; seven grandchildren, Cheryl (Eric) Borchert of Nashville, Rick (Heather) Dunn of Columbia, Bryan (fiancee Lori) Dunn of Nashville, Virginia Kay (Josh) Jones of Hawaii, Miranda Blocker of Columbia, Brad Blocker and Keri Blocker both of Springfield; three step-grandchildren, Matt Auster of Baton Rouge, Heather Abdon and Mikey Abdon both of Columbia; two great-grandchildren, Ricky Dunn and Nena Hope Blocker; special nieces, Donna Lea, Gail Cathey, Mary Ann Dotson; several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Ella Brown Thomason, Gladys Baxter, Annie Mai Blocker and two brothers, John Wesley Blocker, Henry Alvin Blocker and one granddaughter, Nena Michelle Blocker.Pallbearers will be David Priest, Randy Baxter, Ray Dotson, John Ray Dotson, Tommy Carroll, Bart Kelley, Todd Baxter and Thomas Runions. Honorary pallbearers will be Dan Pope, Fulton Rankin, and other Bailey Street neighbors, Clyde Farris, Sam Kennedy, Robert Bell, James & Martha Posey, Lewis & Ella Jane Hann, Dr. J.O. Williams, Jr., Union Carbide Retirees and Employees, South Point Church Members and Shady Brook Mall walkers.
