McAdams, Sr., 70, a loved, well-known, life-long resident of Maury County, died Saturday, March 26, 2011 at Maury Regional Medical Center following a three month illness. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Graymere Church of Christ with Brother John Vaughan and Brother Wendell Robinson officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Monday from 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols. Memorials may be made to Daniel Thomas Endowment Fund at Columbia Academy, 1101 West 7th Street, Columbia 38401 or Jerry Schoeberl Scholarship at the University of Tennessee at Martin, 328 Administration Building, Martin 38238. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. Born and reared in Maury County, he was the son of the late Sherman McAdams and Grace Savage McAdams. As a youngster, he attended Highland Park Elementary School with perfect attendance, Columbia Military Academy, and was a 1959 graduate of Columbia Central High School. He also attended Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. His entire working career was as conductor for CSX & L&N Railroad Companies. Mr. McAdams was a member and active in the work of the Graymere Church of Christ for a number of years and loved his God and wonderful church family. Active in civic and community affairs, he loved life, loved to laugh and talk with his family, and loved the railroad and to fellowship with his railroad friends and former co-workers. He was known for his kindness and tender heart. He was a former member of the Columbia Jaycees and having attained the rank of Eagle Scout in his youth, remained an avid supporter of Boy Scouts of America. Richard was well-known for his remarkable sense of humor, a characteristic that served him well as the father and grandfather of a large, loving, and active family. He was a friend, if you needed one, a brother, if you didn't have one, and a "Poppie" to all children. He was the beloved husband, best friend, and soulmate of the former Marna Morrow. Their marriage of almost 48 years was solemnized August 3, 1963 at East Side Church of Christ. This union was blessed with six children, Edith G. Schoeberl of Columbia, Amy (Shane) Wilson of Columbia, Julie M. Woods of Franklin, Richard K. (Katie) McAdams, Jr. of Murfreesboro, Patrick R. (Selena) McAdams of Memphis, and Erin McAdams of Columbia; ten grandchildren, Stratton Schoeberl, Isabella Schoeberl, Jerald "Trace" Schoeberl, III, Lillian Wilson, McAdams "Mac" Wilson, Austin Woods, Walker Woods, Richard "Trey" McAdams, III, Williams "Wills" McAdams, and Taylor McAdams; brother, Danny McAdams; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Myra and Jim Thomas; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Buddy and Carla Morrow; nieces, Jennifer (Larry) Richardson and Amanda Ruth (Roscoe) Voss; nephews, Archie Manson Morrow, Richard (Gwen) McAdams, Tim McAdams, David (Jan) Thomas, James (Jennifer) Thomas, John (Natalie) Thomas, Danny McAdams, Jr., Jamie McAdams, and Ben (Ashley) McAdams; several beloved cousins and great-nieces and great-nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jerry Schoeberl and a nephew, Daniel Thomas. Active pallbearers are Archie Manson Morrow, David Manson Thomas, Richard D. McAdams, James S. McAdams, Edwin Couch, Jeremy McCoy, Ronnie Perkerson, William Stanfill, Ray Pace, Tommy Hulan, Larry Fox, Melvin Potts, Lee Selman, and Mike Brown. Honorary pallbearers include CSX and L&N employees, Railroad Retirement breakfast friends, Boy Scout Troop #109, Elders and Deacons of Graymere Church of Christ, Alan Scudder, Gary Martin, Jerry Williams, Elmer "Buddy" Rogers, Jim Schoeberl, Tippy Moore, Dr. James Marshall, Dr. Andrew Sisk, Dr. Amit Choski, Dr. Gibran Naddy, Dr. Steven Simmons, Dr. Allan J. Naftilan, Lamar Goad, Allen Dean, Carl Lealand, Jim Lindsey, Jim Cook, Allison Foster, Phil Hulsey, Mark Hughes, Sammy McCandless, Gene Lindsey, and Doris, Susan, and Marilyn from Hospice Compassas, Heart Failure Floor at Vanderbilt University Hospital, Derrick Stratton, Rachel Schultze, and Melissa at Vanderbilt. The McAdams family wants everyone to know that Richard expressed his thankfulness and gratitude for all who prayed in his behalf, supported his family by furnishing food, sending cards, visiting him while at home and with his family. He wanted to send his love through his family to all those who showed them kindness, support, and love throughout his illness.
