Robert E. Lee "R. L." Durham, Jr., 58, owner-operator of Durham's Garage, died Saturday, March 22, 2008 at his residence on Stanfill Drive. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Randy Kersey, Jeff Durham, and Theodore Durham officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends Sunday and Monday from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. The Lewis County native was the son of the late Robert E. Lee Durham, Sr. and Zilda Ray Rone Durham. He was a graduate of Summertown High School, veteran of the U. S. Army during Vietnam, and member of the Church of Christ. He played softball in Hampshire and coached and played softball in Mt. Pleasant for a number of years. Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Ada "Fay" Burgess Durham; daughter, Jacquelyn Butler (Mark) Williams of Columbia; sisters, Linda (Henry) Chapman of Mt. Pleasant and Lydia (Mike) Holden of Summertown; brothers, Miley (Linda) Durham of Lawrenceburg, Jeff (Carrie) Durham, and Theodore (Penny) Durham, both of Summertown; grandchildren, Mark Adam Williams, Jackson Walker Williams, and Patrick Leland Williams, all of Columbia; brothers-in-law, Jerry (Cheryl) Thornton and Dwight (Sheila) Thornton; several nieces and nephews. The family especially wishes to thank members of Summertown Church of Christ, Main Street Church of Christ, and other friends and family for their care and concern during his illness. Active pallbearers are teammates on the Hamilton Court Softball Team, family and friends. Honorary pallbearers include staff of Maury Regional Hospital Oncology Unit, Drs. Freel and Iverson and staff, Dr. Lee and staff, staff of Home Health of Middle Tennessee, Teresa Riggins, staff of Moore Care Ambulance Service, and Health Angels, Kim, Jessica, and Chris.
