Robert M. Stoops, 96, retired machinist with Monsanto Chemical Company and resident of Merrill Lane, died Saturday, June 8, 2019 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 10:00 A.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Reverend Paul Joiner officiating. Burial will follow in Wilson Cemetery with military honors provided by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 4:00 – 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Condolences may extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born February 18, 1923 in Butler, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Arthur Mertz Stoops and the late Margaret McCandless Stoops. On December 25, 1943, he married Dorothy L. Cayce Stoops who preceded him in death March 21, 1998. He served in the United States Army Air Corps during World War II and was a life member of the American Legion Post 19. Mr. Stoops was a founding father of Zion Christian Academy and a member of Zion Presbyterian Church, where he served as former deacon and elder. He was on the board for the Habitat of Humanity. Survivors include his daughter, Margaret D. Stoops Taylor of Columbia; sons, Charles A. “Buddy” (Elaine) Stoops of Columbia; David Michael “Mike” (Rebecca) Stoops of Lake Zurich, Illinois; daughter-in-law, Deborah Cathey Stoops; 1st son-in-law, Robert E. Taylor; grandchildren, Dawne (Tim) Howell; Cayce E. Stoops, Kelly D. Stoops, Jennifer (Jonathon) Potts, Josh (Hollie) Stoops, Jay (Jennifer) Stoops, Justin Stoops; great grandchildren, Jeffery Shawn (Erica) Blocker, Micheal Shane (Heather) Blocker, Rainey D. Howell, Korbyn Stoops, Ethan Beasley, Trinity Stoops, Tristin Stoops, Maximus Ward, Mathias Ward; great great grandchildren, Ellie Kate Blocker, Hayden Monroe Blocker; brother, John (Reba) Stoops of Butler, Pennsylvania; and sister, Marilyn Stoops of Butler, Pennsylvania. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his sons, Robert M. Stoops, Jr., and John Evan Stoops.
