MRS. RUBY GROVES BERRY CHURCH Mrs. Ruby Groves Berrry Church, 88, retired from E. I. DuPont Corporation and long-time resident of the Darks Mill Road in the Athendale Community, died Saturday, October 12, 2002 at Life Care Center. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Earl Davis officiating. Burial will be in the Groves Cemetery in Hickman County. The family will visit with friends after 1:00 p.m. Sunday the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Godwin-Chappell United Methodist Church. The Hickman County native was reared in the Fly Community in Maury County where her parents, the late Daniel Abraham Groves and Ethel Vaughan Groves were merchants. She was a graduate of the Roach School and Santa Fe School where she was a member of the basketball team. A long-time member of the Godwin-Chappell United Methodist Church, Mrs. Church was also a volunteer with the Maury Regional Hospital Auxiliary. She was first married to the late James I. "Pete" Berry. On November 16, 1956, she married Howard William Church who preceded her in death December 19, 1994. Survivors include two sons, Jimmy Groves (Jo Ann) Berry of Columbia and Larry Erwin (Dollie) Berry of Hendersonville, North Carolina; two step-daughters, Mrs. Perry (Nancy) Upshaw of Lewisburg and Mrs. J. W. (Jane Ann) Slaughter of the Athendale Community; five grandchildren, Natalie Jo Berry of Asheville, North Carolina, Jeffrey S. Berry, Mrs. R. Wayne (Jeannie) Harris, Mrs. Mike (Jill) Webster, of Columbia, Mrs. Kenneth (Julie) Jarratt, of Huntsville, Alabama; four step-grandchildren, Jonathon C. Slaughter, Jeremy W. Slaughter, both of Columbia, David M. Upshaw of Franklin, Mark V. (Kim) Upshaw of Memphis; two nieces, Mrs. Paul (Starling) Grisham of Tifton, Georgia, Mrs. Charles (Gail) Pigg of Santa Fe; two nephews, Dwight I. (Darlene) Groves of the Bear Creek Community, Harry (Peggy) Rountree of Santa Fe; a number of great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Sondra Sue Berry, a grandson, Leslie Erwin Berry, a great-grandson, Jeffrey Cheyenne Berry and a sister, Mrs. Paul (Mary) Rountree.
