MR. S. O. THOMAS, JR. Mr. S. O. Thomas, Jr., 88, retired agent and yardmaster for the L & N Railroad, died Friday, September 13, 2002 at his residence on Oakwood Drive. A memorial service will be conducted Monday at 3:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Tom Smith and Rev. Jeff Jacobs officiating. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols and from 2:30 to 3:00 p.m. Monday at the church. Rev. Frank Smith will conduct a private family committal service at Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church. The Maury County native was the son of the late S. O. Thomas, Sr. and Lura McDonald Thomas. Educated in Maury County schools, he was a 1933 graduate of Columbia Central High School. Mr. Thomas was an avid sportsman and was instrumental in organizing and leading the activities of Boy Scout Troop 114 for many years. He was a former long-time member of the Columbia Kiwanis Club and a volunteer for the Maury Regional Hospital Auxiliary. Active in the affairs of the First United Methodist Church for many years, he served the church in numerous capacities including President of the Ayres-Whitney Sunday School Class. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Martha Ross Thomas of Columbia; a brother, Ralph (Sebelle) Thomas of Counts, Tennessee; a niece, Everett Carlton (Joe) Durham; four nephews, Ralph Thomas, Jr., Frank D. Thomas, Edmond M. Thomas and Donald Thomas. He was preceded in death by a sister, Myrtle Thomas (Mrs. Jack) Carlton and two brothers, Revis Thomas and Donald Thomas. The Ayres-Whitney Sunday School Class of First United Methodist Church will serve as honorary pallbearers.
