Mrs. Sammy Lane Wilkins Broadwell, 89, long-time resident of Riverside Drive, died Monday, August 23, 2004 at NHC of Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Jim Hughes and Rev. Jeff Jacob officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors and after 12:00 Noon Wednesday in the church atrium. Memorials may be made to the First United Methodist Church, 222 West 7th Street, Columbia, 38401. Notes of sympathy may be sent to www.oakesandnichols.com. A native of Only, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Carl Bate Wilkins and Eunice Mable Murphree Wilkins. She was a 1933 graduate of Columbia Central High School and 1934 graduate of Fall's Business College in Nashville. A member of First United Methodist Church since 1923, Mrs. Broadwell taught Sunday School for 40 years, was a member of the Ayers-Whitney Sunday School Class and United Methodist Women. She served as leader of Girl Scout Troop 85 for eleven years and was employed by the Tennessee Farm Bureau for 14 years. She was married August 15, 1942 to Riley Denny Broadwell who preceded her in death December 26, 1997. Survivors include her daughter, Cherry Lane B. Darken and son-in-law, E. R. "Woody" Darken of the Leiper's Fork Community; step-grandsons, Brett (Annie) Darken and Eric (Anne) Darken, both of Nashville; step-great-granddaughter, Jane Anne Darken of Nashville; brother-in-law, Homer Broadwell of Riverside, Alabama; sisters-in-law, Sadie Thomas, Zona (Mrs. L. P.) Thomas and Kathleen (Mrs. James) Cox, all of Boaz, Alabama. Active pallbearers are Brett Darken, Eric Darken, Mike Smith, Bob Ary, Dr. David Williams and Neal Blair. Honorary pallbearers include Mr. and Mrs. Howard Dalton and members of the Ayers-Whitney Sunday School Class.
