Sherman Massey, 92, retired Security Guard at Maury Regional Medical Center, died Monday, July 17, 2017, at his residence on South Cross Bridges Road. A graveside service will be conducted Thursday at 10:30 A.M. at Cross Bridges Cemetery with Bill Dawson officiating. Military honors will be provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 5:00 - 8:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Born and reared in the Cross Bridges Community of Maury County, he was the son of the late George Taylor Massey, Sr. and the late Laura Estelle Holt Massey. On January 14, 1946, he married a wonderful lady, Rachel Deene Morrow Massey; and their sixty-six-year marriage ended with her death July 7, 2012. During World War II, he served in the U. S. Army as a Private First Class Rifleman in Company E, 143rd Infantry Regiment. He was a Purple Heart recipient after being wounded on the front line in France in 1945. Mr. Massey was very proud and grateful to return to U.S. soil. Before beginning his twenty-year career at Maury Regional Medical Center, he worked alongside his father building barns and houses; and he helped restore Vine Hill along with Barney Luckett. Mr. Massey enjoyed fishing, hunting, raising and training bird dogs and beagles. Survivors include his daughter, Sherell Massey Hickman of Cross Bridges Community; great friend, Billy Ray Campbell of Columbia; nephew, Lewis Holt; and niece, Debbie Green. He was preceded in death by a brother, George Taylor Massey, Jr.; and sisters, Martha Sue Holt, Marie Massey, and Elsie Green. Pallbearers will be Rickey Massey, Rodney Massey, Lewis Holt, Michael Massey, Stephen Morrow, Andrew Morrow, and Scott Morrow. The family would like to express a special thank you to Hospice Compassus for the caring nurses and aids who took great care of Mr. Massey during his illness.
