Shirley Bell Brown Farlow

Shirley Bell Brown Farlow, longtime resident of the Pottsville Community, went to be with her Lord on Sunday, December 8, 2019 at NHC Columbia. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 2:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Kenny McFarlen and Kenneth Bray officiating. Burial will follow in Brown Cemetery on Hardison Mill Road. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 11:00 A.M. until service time at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials to Old Lasea Church of Christ, c/o Mike Corter, 945 Collins West Road, Lewisburg, TN 37091. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born September 20, 1938 in Maury County, she was the oldest of eight children of Mayhue and Bell Brown. In July 1955 she married Joe Farlow, Jr. who preceded her in death August 28, 2018. Shirley was raised in the Spring Hill and Columbia area. The child of farmers, she grew up to be an avid farmer and gardener herself, always working right beside her husband in the fields and running their dairy farm. Besides farming, she was a devoted housewife and mother, known for crocheting beautiful doilies, afghans, and later enjoyed word puzzles. She was a member of Old Lasea Church of Christ and served as caretaker there with her husband for many years. For a brief period, she worked out of the home when her children were young as a substitute teacher at Pottsville Rally Hill School and later as a cafeteria lady at the Old Spring Hill High School. Survivors include her children, Mickey Joe (Melissa) Farlow,  Cathy (Stanley) Reed both of Columbia; granddaughters, Michelle Farlow (John) Floyd, Crystal Farlow, and Carmen Reed (Kyle) Collins; great granddaughters, Jaylyn Jo Floyd, Sara Belle Floyd, Peyton Ryleigh Collins; sisters, Patsy (Harold) Huey of Columbia; Peggy (Stan) Robertson of Columbia; Deborah (Larry) Collins of Spring Hill; and brothers, Harold (Margie) Brown of Florida; Terry (John Eslick) Brown of Spring Hill.  In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Jennie Ring and Judy Burns. Active pallbearers will be her nephews. Honorary pallbearers include Stan Robertson, Harold Huey, Billy Ring, and members of Old Lasea Church of Christ. The family would like to express a special thanks to the staff and caregivers of NHC Columbia and Caris Hospice.
