Steven Joseph Holmes, 75, retired Director of Internal Affairs with the State of Tennessee and resident of Antioch, died Sunday, January 14, 2018 at TriStar Centennial Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, January 22, at 7:00 P.M. at Tusculum Hills Baptist Church with Rev. Paul Gunn officiating. A graveside service with military honors will be held Tuesday, January 23, at 1:00 P.M. at Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery in Pegram. The family will visit with friends Monday from 3:00 - 7:00 P.M. at Tusculum Hills Baptist Church, 4930 Nolensville Road, Nashville. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests "Don't be a stranger; show kindness and give to those in need in his memory." Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born September 24, 1942 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Kenneth Joseph Holmes and the late Julia Hennon Holmes. He served in the Special Forces Units of the Fort Bragg 82nd Airborne Division and the Fort Campbell 101st Airborne Division. During his twenty-year military career, he was awarded Parachutist Badge (Master), Expert Badge M-16, Expert Badge Cal. 45, Good Conduct Medal, 5th award, Combat Infantry Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Star Medal, Army Commendation Medal (4th Oak Leaf Cluster), and Meritorious Service Medal (1st Oak Leaf Cluster). Mr. Holmes was a firm believer in education and had earned two Masters degrees: Law Enforcement and Psychology. He was a member of Tusculum Hill Baptist Church. Survivors include his daughters, Tonda Holmes (Greg) Bogan of Lawrenceville, GA, and Kristy Holmes (Douglas) Foote of Brush Creek, TN; son, Steven Gerald (Anna) Holmes of Williamsport, TN; grandchildren, Megan Holmes (Will Boles) of Murfreesboro, TN, Samantha Bogan (Harrison Moskowitz) of Lawrenceville, GA, Brooke (Shane) Dial of North Carolina, Samuel (Courtney) Foote of Pleasant Shade, TN, Alexander Foote of Brush Creek, TN, Laura Holmes of Columbia, TN, Emily Holmes (Ryan Warf), Rebekah Holmes, and Jacob Holmes, all of Williamsport, TN; great grandchildren, Owen Bogan and Ian Bogan, both of Lawrenceville, GA, and Camden Ferrell of Williamsport, TN; brother, Kenneth Holmes of Maryland; sister, Judith (Mike) Gusky of Pittsburgh, PA; special friend, Mary Ruth McPherson and her grandchildren; mother of his children, Joyce (Billy) Coggins; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews. He was preceded in death by his sisters, Carol Dragnet, Phyllis Reilly, and Donna Thornton. Pallbearers will be Kenneth Holmes, Jacob Holmes, Samuel Foote, Alexander Foote, Camden Ferrell, Joe Gusky, Brandon Moore, and Kyle Harris.
