Mrs. Sue Bratton Thompson, 91, retired homemaker and teacher, died Friday, October 24, 2008 at her residence on Woods Circle. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 1:00 p.m. at First United Methodist Church with Dr. Jim Hughes and Rev. Frank Smith officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, 222 West 7th Street, Columbia 38401. She was a 1935 graduate of Columbia Central High School and Austin Peay University where she earned a B. S. Degree in Education and lettered in basketball and tennis. After graduation from Austin Peay she taught several years in the Hickman County School system. She was married May 29, 1945 to Dr. Bob C. Thompson, long-time Maury County veterinarian. Dr. Thompson died October 31, 1993. Mrs. Thompson was active in the affairs of First United Methodist Church for many years and was a member of Ayres-Whitney Sunday School Class. She also was an avid bridge player. Survivors include her daughter, Sara Catharina Thompson (Van)Dockery of Columbia; a sister, Beryl Bratton (Lt. Colonel Duncan) Beaumont of New Bern, North Carolina; sisters-in-law, Jane Thompson (Dr. E. W.) McPherson of Nashville and Sue Bratton of Shady Grove; and several cousins. She was preceded in death by a son, Douglas Thompson; son-in-law, Van Dockery; three sisters, Mary Arch Bratton Stout, Sara Bratton Johnson, and Rebecca Bratton Patterson; two brothers, Robert H. Bratton, Jr. and William Moody Bratton. Active pallbearers are Dr. Richard C. Dodds, Dr. Marvin Beard, Justice William C. Koch, Jr., Bob Bratton, Tom Bratton, Joe Bratton, Joe Johnson, Charles Beaumont, Lt. Col. John Adams, Tom Bader, and Scott Janecek. Honorary pallbearers include Dr. Kenneth Poag, Dennis Zullig, and the Ayres-Whitney Sunday School Class. The family expresses deep appreciation to Peggy Jack and her caregiver, Carolyn Norman.
