Mr. Thadius Hazel Gilliam, 88, retired locomotive engineer with L&N Railroad and a resident of Walnut Lane, died Monday, April 28, 2003, at NHC Columbia Health Care. Funeral services will be conducted 10:30 A.M. Thursday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Jim Collins and Dr. John W. Tresch, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 4:00 - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to West End Baptist Church, 900 West Seventh Street, Columbia, TN 34801. He attended Calumet High School in Chicago, Illinois. Mr. Gilliam was a member of West End Baptist Church and the Senior Men's Sunday School Class. He was a former member of First Baptist Church, where he served as deacon, Chairman of the deacons, and taught Sunday School. Mr. Gilliam was a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers, a 50-year Mason, and a member of Columbia Lodge #31 F&AM, a member of the Royal Arch, Lafayette Chapter #4. Survivors include his wife of sixty-seven years, Regina Catherine West Gilliam of Columbia; one son, Thomas R. (Peggy) Gilliam of Big Canoe, Georgia; one daughter, Beverly Gilliam (John) Tresch, Jr., of Bluefield, West Virginia; five grandchildren, John David (Lara) Tresch of Waynesboro, Virginia; William Kyle (Lisa) Tresch of Tulsa, Oklahoma; John T. (Tabitha) Gilliam of Douglasville, Georgia; Cynthia Gilliam (Bart) Hubbs of Franklin; Summer Blair Gilliam of Big Canoe, Georgia; and four great grandchildren, Colin Tresch, Erin Tresch, and Alison Tresch, all of Tulsa, Oklahoma; Taylor Gilliam of Douglasville, Georgia; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Earl T. Gilliam and Fred E. Gilliam; two sisters, Hattie Dorsey and Blanche Ferguson. Pallbearers will be David Tresch, Kyle Tresch, John T. Gilliam, Bart Hubbs, Joseph R. West, Charles "Bungle" West, Howell Wantland, Chesley Parrish, Tom McDonald, and Joe Bradley. Honorary pallbearers will be Moody West, Howard Massey, Larry Massey, Sidney Richey, Cliff Ragland, Elton Lucas, Knox Surles, Tim Anderson, Neal Fussell, Clyde Woods, Malcom Alley, James Carpenter, Kenny Knox, Byron Cox, W. L. Hunter, Jr., Jim Castleberry, Jimmy Jones, Dr. Harry Helm, Dr. Allyn Lay, Dr. Gaylon Harris, Dr. Amit Choksi, Dr. Andrew Sisk, all retired and present employees of L& N and CSX Railroad, deacons of West End Baptist Church, members of Columbia Masonic Lodge #31, and Walnut Lane neighbors.
