View Funeral Webcast  Thomas Richard Brown, 87, passed away peacefully at his home on Thursday, April 12, 2018 surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 12:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with John Vaughan officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the Herbert Griffin American Legion Post # 19. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 4:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at the funeral home. The family suggests memorials be made to Columbia Academy, 1101 West 7th Street, Columbia, Tennessee 38401. Richard Brown was born and raised in Hampshire, Tennessee, to the late Herbert Otho Brown and the late Flora Josephine Patton Brown Peery. He met and married the late Velma Ruth Chunn Brown in Columbia, Tennessee and it is here that they settled and lived out their 60 years of marriage. He served in the United States Navy and has been a member of the American Legion for 65 years. He was always a regular at every ham breakfast. An avid golfer and lover of sports, he was a member of Stoneybrook Golf Club and in recent years the Mt. Pleasant Golf Club. His love of golf paid off with 2 hole in ones, the first at age 75. He coached basketball, baseball little league and bowled in a league with his wife in their early years of marriage. His biggest priority was family and he kept in touch with both sides living near and far. Each was just a phone call away and he called often. Survivors include his daughter, Latisha Marie Brown; son, Thomas Richard "Ricky" (Anita) Brown, Jr.; grandsons, T.J. Cain; Johnathon Cain; Casey Brown; great granddaughter, Adalyn Cain; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Ernest Peery; brothers, Patton Brown; and W. R. "Bill" Brown; and sisters, Marie Holden; and Gladys Brown Renfro. Active pallbearers will be Eddie Baker, Bobby Grimmett, Vance Hendrickson, Wendell Jolley, Jerry Kennedy, Jeff Knox, Terry Nevette, and Larry Vining. Honorary pallbearers include his grandson, nieces and nephews, David Dodson, Allen Elias, Jack Stanfill, Al Plank, Everett Grimmett, Farris Grimes, W.M. Jaggers, Wendall Harmon, Jerry Brunson, Bud Wiser, Jim Cook and family, Catherine Bolton and family. Joe Bell and crew of By Pass Deli, friends at Graymere Country Club, friends at Stoneybrook Golf Club, friends at Mt. Pleasant Golf Club, Stauffer Chemical Company Retirees, Richard Wagster, Portia Harris, Allison Kittrell, and The Trash Fairy. The family would like to express a special thanks to Dr. Gibran Naddy and staff, and Caris Healthcare, especially Pam, Tammy, Kayla, and Lisa for all their loving care.
