Thomas Jackson "Tom" Burt, Jr., 90, retired farmer and resident of North Cayce Lane, died Friday, March 11, 2016 at Maury Regional Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 3:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Brother Frank Webb and Steve Burt officiating. Burial will follow in Zion Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 3:00 - 5:00 P.M. and Monday from 2:00 - 3:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born April 12, 1925 in Decatur, Alabama, he was the son of the late Thomas Jackson Burt, Sr. and the late Elsie Ussery Burt. In August 1949 he married Shirley Claire Descans Burt who preceded him in death October 9, 1988. In May 1997 he married Joy Harper Burt who survives. An avid outdoorsman, Mr. Burt enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping; but he truly loved living and working on his farm, raising cattle, pigs, tobacco and all kinds of flowers. A very talented floral designer, he also assisted his mother with Vaughn Flower Shop for many years. He served in the U. S. Army during World War II with tours in the South Pacific and Philippine Islands. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Danny (Melanie) Burt of Williamsport and Ricky (Susan) Burt of Rogersville, Alabama; grandchildren, Daniel Keith (Renée) Burt, Jr., Laura Elizabeth Burt, Jennifer Burt (Phillip) Dean, Jonathan Burt; great grandchildren, Bryant Burt, Ethan Burt, Katelin Burt, Brayden Ford, Adrianna Ford, Layla Ford, Carter Dean, Kenslee Davis; sister-in-law, Lee Burt of Columbia; and nephews Steve (Sylvia) Burt and Scott Burt. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Wallace Burt, James Burt, and Ray Burt. Active pallbearers will be Phillip Dean, Jonathan Burt, Steve Burt, Lucas Burt, Bryant Burt, Dan Burt, Shane Siniard, and Scott Burt. Honorary pallbearers will include Pete Wright, Tommy Mayberry, Rupert Colmore, Robert Fleming, Rodney Jones, Monte McDonald, Steve Secrest, William Sanders, Jim Burt, Russell Burt, Charlie Boyd, Bobby Ray Smith, and Arthur Hargrove.
