View Funeral WebcastThomas Harold Davis, 90, former resident of Tinsley Lane, died Thursday, August 25, 2016 at Tennessee State Veterans Home. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with David Morris officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with full military honors provided by the Giles County Honor Guard. The family will visit with friends Monday from 12:00 P.M. until service time at the funeral home. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born September 12, 1925 in Giles County, he was the son of the late Guy Thomas Davis and Geneva Couch Davis. Harold was born into a farming family which eventually grew to four additional siblings. Early in his life, his family moved to Puncheon Branch, Tennessee, where he attended Minor Hill Elementary School and Minor Hill High School, while working on the family farm. As a young farm boy, he plowed many fields to help his family, while attending school at the same time. With the advent of World War II, Harold was drafted and sent to Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia. It was here that he was chosen to be in the United States Navy. Taking his first long train trip he arrived at San Diego, California for basic training. After completing his basic training, he was sent to help crew a newly commissioned ship called the USS Shackle. From 1944 until August 1945, the Shackle saw combat action at Iwo Jima, Okinawa, and the South China Sea. In early August 1945, Pop was enroute back to the United States when World War II officially ended. In the latter part of 1945, Harold participated in the shakedown cruise of the USS Perry. Released from active duty, he returned to his home in Minor Hill, Tennessee and started his college education at Martin Junior College in Pulaski, Tennessee. After two years at Martin, Pop graduated with an Associate Degree. After graduation he participated in several career fields; he was in construction for a short period, and then worked for the Singer Sewing Machine Company selling sewing machines in the Columbia, and Maury County area. While in Columbia, he met the love of his life Margaret Lois Bullion Nall. They were married on February 8, 1958. Lois passed away on April 11, 2014. They were happily married for 58 years. They both truly loved to travel, taking trips all over the United States, Europe, and Hawaii. During those years, Harold worked for Columbia Rock Products, National Carbon Company, and Union Carbide Company. Survivors include his son, LTC (Army-Retired) Ronnie Nall and his wife Anne Nall; two grandchildren, Beth Nall-Dome, her husband Eric Dome and LTC (Army-Retired) Chris Nall, his wife Donna Nall; seven great-grandchildren some of whom live in Colorado and Alaska; sister-in-law, Sue Davis; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Willard Davis and Alton Davis; sisters, Sue Smith and Dorothy Norwood. Pallbearers will be members of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. Honorary pallbearers include Butch Prosser, Michael Prosser, Miko Dooley, Bradley Gregg, and Scott Barnhill. Harold was extremely happy in the Murfreesboro-Tennessee State's Veterans Home. He loved the staff, the food, his fellow Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, Airmen, and Coast Guard members and about all the closeness of the group. The family would like express a special thanks to the Staff of the Tennessee State Veterans Home in Murfreesboro for a job well done which was shown with love and compassion.
