Mr. Tom HammondMr. Thomas Vernon "Pop" Hammond, 83, retired field investigator with Retail Credit Company and resident of Sharon Circle, died Sunday, April 25, 2004 at Life Care Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 12:00 noon Wednesday, at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Bob Adair officiating. Burial will be in Friendship Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 4 - 7p.m. and Wednesday from 11 - 12 noon at the funeral home.. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Madison County native was the son of the late Aubrey Hammond and Flora Arnette Hammond. He was born and raised in Jackson and has made Columbia his home since 1950. He was a graduate of Jackson High School, attended Union University and was a graduate of University of Tennessee at Martin. Mr. Hammond served in the U. S. Army Air Corp during World War II. He was a former member of Columbia Elks Lodge and American Legion Post 19. He enjoyed gardening and fishing. He was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Mildred Warden Hammond of Columbia; one daughter, Julia Hammond (Steve) Manley of Columbia; two sons, Thomas Rickey "Rick" Hammond and James Warden "Jim" (Lisa) Hammond of Columbia; one brother, Bill (Ruth) Hammond of New Orleans, Louisiana; sister-in-law, Helen Warden (Dudley) Hardaway of Columbia; brother-in-law, Charles (Mary) Warden of Mooresville; five grandchildren, Jeremy Matthew Hammond, Roland Stephen Manley, Redford Hammond Manley, Helen Grace Hammond, and Gretta Synclair Hammond, one niece, Susan Greene; and one nephew Thom Bryant Hammond. He was preceded in death by one brother, James S. Hammond. Pallbearers will be Brett Herrman, Doug Shapiro, Joe Brown, Steve Walters, Chris Sellars, Randy Whitley, Kyle Green, Ben Bayless, Jim Poling and Donnie Allen. Honorary pallbearers will be Charles Warden, Dudley Hardaway, Frank Cole, Dan Batey, Frances Thigpen, Ingrid Shapiro, Clyde Yeager, Leon Church, Arthur Ingram, John Rogers, Everette Renfro, Karen Baldwin South, Phyllis Boehms Herbert, Rhonda Meservy Dahlhauser, Tracy Mindledorff Godschall, Dr. Thomas Farmer and his staff, and Vanessa Purdom and the staff at Life Care Center.
