Mr. Velvis Marshall Cates, 64, retired employee of M.C.West, retired dairy farmer and resident of N. Campbell Blvd., died Sunday, January 19, 2003 at NHC Hillview. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday at 10:30 A.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. John Rushing officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. The Hickman County native was the son of the late Dewey Cates and Lillie Baker Cates. He was married to Betty Jo Davis Cates who preceded him in death September 12, 1979. Survivors include three daughters Betty Jean Boyd, Lily Jane (Wayne) Hutt, Carol Lee (Danny) Johnson all of Columbia; one son, Ricky Dean Cates of Clifton; three brothers, Harold (Wanda) Cates of Columbia, Bobby (Debbie Jean) Cates of Mt. Pleasant, Dale (Nancy) Cates of Williamsport; one sister, Opal Cates of Culleoka; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and extended family at Place of Hope. Pallbearers will be Tom Kerwin, Billy Brooks, Leon Hill, Dan Stawski and Walter Raney. Honorary pallbearers will be Newton Emmerson, Kim Hart, Billy Worting, Kelly Hanvey and Kim Johns.
