View Funeral Webcast Mr. Virgil H. Moore, Jr. 95, retired President and CEO of First Farmers & Merchants National Bank, died Monday, December 28, 2020 at NHC Maury Regional Transitional Care. Born October 21, 1925 in Maury County, he was the son of the late Virgil H. Moore, Sr. and the late Fannie Mae Arterburn Moore. On December 20, 1947, he married Nancy Ruth Griffin Moore who preceded him in death June 9, 2015. Mr. Moore was also preceded in death by his sister, Jaska Moore Hobbs. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-love, William Griffin Moore, Sr. and Jenny Brawner Moore of Columbia; grandchildren, William Griffin Moore, Jr. of Murfreesboro; Jennifer Gail Moore (Joshua) Webb of Mt. Pleasant; great grandchildren, Samuel James Webb, and Emmaline Ruth Webb; and brother-in-law, Billy Hobbs. Mr. Moore’s personal philosophy is “God first, family second, and First Farmers and Merchants Bank third”. Mr. Moore is an active member and Deacon of the West End Baptist Church in Columbia, Tennessee. Mr. Moore has been a life-long resident of Maury County, graduated from Central High School in 1943 as Salutatorian, and served in the United States Navy from 1943 to 1946 during World War II in the South Pacific on the Destroyer USS Larder 487. Mr. Moore received his education from the University of Tennessee, Vanderbilt University (B.A. and M.S. Degrees), and the School of Banking of the South at Louisiana State University. Mr. Moore taught for the Maury County school system at Spring Hill and served as teacher and principal at Woodrow School. Mr. Moore has had a successful career in Columbia, Tennessee beginning employment with First Farmers & Merchants Bank in 1954, where he has served as President, Chief Executive Officer, Senior Chairman and Director, Honorary Director, and Chairman and Director of First Farmers and Merchants Corporation (One Bank Holding Company). Mr. Moore has also served as Director of the Sixth Federal Reserve District of the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta in Atlanta, Georgia, President and Director of the Tennessee Bankers Association, Advisory Director of TBA Community Bankers Division of the American Bankers Association, Chairman of the TBA Independent Bankers Division, and Chairman of Tennessee Bankers Association, National Bank Division. In addition to his involvement in banking, Mr. Moore assumed other key leadership roles in the community and throughout the state by serving as Trustee and Chairman of Baptist Hospital, Director of Saint Thomas Health Services, Vice-Chairman of the Board of Trustees at Belmont University, a member of the Seton Society, Director of the Boys and Girls Club of Maury County, President and member of the Kiwanis Club of Columbia, Tennessee, President and Director of Maury County Chamber of Commerce, Member of the American Legion Herbert Griffin Post 19, President of Leadership Maury in Maury County, Tennessee; Director of Maury Alliance, Maury County, Tennessee, Chairman and Director of the Industrial Development Board of Maury County, Tennessee, and Chairman of the Baptist Healing Trust. Mr. Moore is a Paul Harris Fellow recipient by the Rotary International Foundation and a George F. Hixson recipient by the Kiwanis International Foundation. A graveside service will be conducted Saturday at 2:00 P.M. at Rose Hill Cemetery with Reverend Rick Elsey officiating. Military honors will be provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19.
