MRS. CLARENCE H. AGENT Mrs. Virginia Hammox "Momma A" Agent, 100, died Saturday, December 14, 2002 at her residence on the Mooresville Pike. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 12:30 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Brother Oliver Pantall officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. She was born in Williamson County the daughter of the late Filmore Wesley Hammox and Elviney Jane Hammock Hammox. In 1906 she and her family moved to the Carter's Creek Community in Maury County when she was four years old. She attended school through the eighth grade at Beech Grove School. She and her husband, C. H. Agent, who died in 1973, married in 1923 and operated a farm for many years. She once said: "I loved being a farmer's wife and working out in the field. There's nothing like being out in the sunshine and fresh air." She also enjoyed gardening and canning, milked cows and one year raised 220 turkeys which she sold at a Nashville market. For several years, Mrs. Agent worked as a seamstress at Storktown, later Weather-Tamer, and Taylor's Laundry. When she retired from public work at age 83, she began sewing and making quilt tops, most of which she gave away. To celebrate her centennial birthday, she decided she wanted to do something different and a special tour of the Saturn plant was arranged. When asked if she liked the tour, Mrs. Agent said "it's the best day I've had in 100 years." Mrs. Agent was a long-time member of the Beech Grove Church of Christ. Survivors include two daughters, Rebecca West and Maxie Haywood, both of Columbia; two sons, Vance (Norma) Agent of Harrodsburg, Kentucky and Harold (Patricia) Agent of Columbia; nine grandchildren, J. B. (Gladys) West, Jr., Judy King, Peggy Alexander, Shirley (Rodger) Pilkinton, Ann (Gary) Parker, Philip Agent, Jane Counts, John C. Haywood and Lynn (Charlie) Taylor; fifteen great-grandchildren; nine great-great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Wesley Hammox and Porter Hammox; three grandchildren, Virginia "Gigi" Agent Estes, Richard Agent, Carol Agent Smith and two grandchildren by marriage, David Alexander and Susan Church.
