Mrs. Virginia Sampson Hayes, 90, former longtime resident of Double Branch Road, died Tuesday, June 5, 2007 at Maury Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 12 noon, Thursday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with Rev. Jeff Jacob and Rev. Melinda Britt officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 4 - 8 at the funeral home. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. The Chicago, Illinois native was the daughter of the late Charles Clifford Sampson and Elizabeth Hayne Sampson. She and her late husband, Edward Thomas "Dump" Hayes, Sr., owned and operated Hayes Grocery. Mrs. Hayes was active in the American Legion Ladies Auxiliary and the Maury Regional Hospital Auxiliary where she was a Super Star. She was a member of First United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women and Ayres Whitney Sunday School Class. She is survived by her son, Edward Thomas "Tommy" (Vickie) Hayes, Jr. of Columbia; two grandsons, Brian Thomas (Stacia) Hayes and Trevor Alan Hayes both of Columbia; and three nieces, Barbara Sampson (Frederick) Borsch of Los Angeles, California, Deborah Sampson Branch of Santa Barbara, California, and Sarah Sampson (Palmer) Moody of La Porte, Indiana. She was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Hayne Sampson. Pallbearers will be Brian Hayes, Palmer Moody, Brad Hayes, DeWayne Hickman, Ray Holcomb, Hal Holcomb, Kenny Marshall and Jimmy Dawson. Honorary pallbearers will be Page Chamberlain, Dan and Marion Sengstacke, Noel and Anne Ammons, Will Reed, members of the Ayres Whitney Sunday School Class and United Methodist Women.
