View Funeral Webcast Shannon Sloan Gilchrist, 73, resident of Columbia, died Friday at Williamson Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, July 14, 2020, at 2:30 P.M. at Graymere church of Christ, with Jack Gilchrist officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery. The family will visit with friends Monday, July 13, 2020, from 5:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home and Tuesday from 1:30 P.M. – 2:30 P.M. at the church. Oakes & Nichols Funeral Directors are assisting the family with arrangements. The family requests to adhere to CDC Guidelines of social distancing and recommends facial covering while attending the funeral services. Memorials can be made to the Tuesday/Thursday School at Graymere church of Christ, 1320 Trotwood Ave, Columbia, TN 38401. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com. Born September 2, 1946, in Maury County, she was the daughter of the late Jack Farrington Sloan and the late Virginia Bills Shannon Sloan. She was a graduate of Columbia Central High School’s Class of 1964, where she also worked in the bookstore and was a member of the National Honor Society, and the BETA Club. Mrs. Gilchrist went on to attend the University of Kentucky before transferring to Memphis State University, where she received her B.S. in Elementary Education. She taught at Pikes Peak Christian School in Colorado Springs, CO, was a substitute teacher and volunteer for Columbia Academy, and worked 10 years as the school director at Graymere church of Christ Tuesday/Thursday School. Mrs. Gilchrist was a devoted military wife and mother, supporting her husband and older son well during their Air Force careers. After her husband’s retirement, the two enjoyed traveling together. Mrs. Gilchrist was a very active member of Graymere church of Christ, where she participated in the Meals on Wheels program, taught and attended the ladies Bible class, volunteered in the nursery, and was a part of the senior group. She also spent much of her time volunteering as a den mother for the Boy Scouts and helped both of her sons in becoming Eagle Scouts. Mrs. Gilchrist also volunteered as co-president of Parent Teachers Association in Omaha, Nebraska, and Columbia Military Academy Alumni Association. She was a member of the Tennassee Chapter of the DAR, Alpha Delta Kappa, and the Columbia Central High School Class of 1964 monthly luncheons. Mrs. Gilchrist was an avid University of Kentucky fan and Nashville Predators fan and loved to read, travel, and work with children. Most of all, she adored her grandchildren and her pet dogs. She is survived by her husband of 52 years, Michael Lane Gilchrist Sr., whom she married June 22, 1968; sons, Michael Lane (Wendi) Gilchrist Jr. of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA, and Jack Sloan (Katie) Gilchrist of Scott Depot, WV; and grandchildren, Hannah Gilchrist, Sarah Gilchrist, and Andrew Gilchrist. Active pallbearers will include Andrew Gilchrist, Bruce Sloan, Scott Thatcher, Daniel Langley, Tim Chase, Jim Self, Al White, and Andy White. Honorary pallbearers will include past and present elders and deacons of Graymere church of Christ.
