Walter Clifford “Walt” Grimes, 79, retired from AT&T and a resident of Columbia, died Monday, March 10, 2025 at Maury Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, March 18, 2025 at 2:00 PM at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Mt. Nebo Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Monday, March 17, 2025 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Online condolences may be extended at www.oakesandnichols.com.

Walt was born on March 11, 1945 in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida to the late Walter Henry Grimes and the late Elvera Delores Larsen Grimes. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, was a member of the Columbia Lions Club, former president of the Mule Day Concessions, member Maury County Sherriff’s Department Reserve, Telephone Pioneers Club, and the Bellsouth & AT&T Speakers Club and coached Columbia American Little League. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife Abbie Gail Grimes of Columbia; children, Corie Spillers of Columbia, Jack Grimes of Oregon, Marie Grimes of Florida, Jody Grimes of Texas, Angela Wilhoite of Columbia, Audra Todd of Columbia, Bud (Kelsey) Todd of Iowa, and Star Todd of Columbia; grandchildren, Ciara Grimes of Oregon, Johnathon (Tess) Hooper, Jayslyn (Trey) Horton, Jacey (Colby) McConnell, Ciara Orr, Madison McCandless, and Isabella Todd all of Columbia, TN, Mason Todd and Hunter Todd, of Iowa; two great grandchildren, Luke and Lane Hooper; brother Karl Grimes of Florida; and sister Karen Andreau of Florida.

Family and friends will serve as pallbearers.

The family wishes to express a special thank you to Quality Home Health Care, Pamela Huckaby, Linda Maciolet, Hannah, Joanna, Chris, Wanda Fly, the doctors, nurses, and staff at the Nashville V.A., Dr. Walker and staff, and social workers at the V.A., Caregiver Supervisor, Kim DeVoe, the doctors, nurses and staff at Maury Regional Medical Center, Kathleen Hoffman, and the staff at Compassus.

The family would also like to thank the Veterans who visited with Mr. Grimes during his hospital stay. Also, a note of thanks goes to James Amitt who visited with Mr. Grimes while he was receiving treatment at NHC Transitional Center. The family also wants to acknowledge Hondo Griffiths who drove from Kentucky to support the family in their hour of need. There has been so many that we would like to mention but our memory fails us during this time. To all of you, a really big thank you for your love, kind words, sacrifices, and support.
