Rev. Richard Wayne Parks, 79, resident of Columbia, died Monday, February 11, 2008 at NHC Hillview. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Cumberland Presbyterian Church with Rev. E.G. Sims and Rev. Calvin Lunn officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Wednesday from 3 - 8 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society, 2000 Charlotte Ave., Nashville, TN 37203. Notes of sympathy may be sent to the family at www.oakesandnichols.com. Rev. Parks was born September 2, 1928 in Breckenridge County, Kentucky. He was the son of the late Claude Parks and Maggie McCoy Parks. He was a 1946 graduate of Irvington High School in Irvington, KY. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in Korea in 1947-1948. On October 14, 1950 he married Ann Bennett. After entering the ministry in 1961 he attended and graduated from Bethel College in McKenzie, TN in 1964. Rev. Parks served churches in Troy, Mt. Pleasant, Nashville, and Columbia, TN and Paducah, KY. After a lifetime of serving God he retired in December 2003. In addition to his wife of 57 years, Ann Bennett Parks of Columbia, he is survived by two daughters, Kathy (Michael) Layne of Columbia, Jill (Jeff) Lanning of Murfreesboro; one son, Darryl (Karen) Parks of Kernersville, NC; one brother, Lloyd (Sandra) Parks of Irvington, KY; one sister, Sue (Shirley) Wilson of Irvington, KY; seven grandchildren, Angie (John) Aiken, Stacey (Brandon) Jackson, Ashley (Chad) Caldwell, Christopher Layne, Lindsey (Michael) Johnson, Drew Parks, Brett Lanning; one great-grandson, Will Jackson; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Elizabeth Parks Robinson. Pallbearers will be Christopher Layne, Drew Parks, Brett Lanning, Brandon Jackson, Michael Johnson, Chad Caldwell and John Aiken. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Robert Bain and Dr. John Worthman and staff at Columbia Oncology.
