William Bryan Cain, Sr., age 75, passed away Thursday, September 27, 2007 at his residence. Funeral services will be conducted Monday, October 1st at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peter's Episcopal Church with The Reverend Michael Murphy officiating. Burial will follow in St. John's Episcopal Churchyard at Ashwood with full military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19. The family will visit with friends Sunday, September 30th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols and one hour prior to the service Monday at St. Peter's Episcopal Church. Born in Old Hickory, Tennessee in 1932, he was the son of the late Marshall L. and Willie Bryan Renegar Cain. He was a graduate of Gallatin High School Class of 1950 and was a Korean War veteran. He earned his Doctor of Jurisprudence Degree from Cumberland University Law School in 1958. From 1958-1959 he served as assistant to the Comptroller of the Tennessee Treasury. He came to Columbia as a young lawyer in 1959 to join the law firm of MacFarland and Colley. In 1968, he joined the law firm of Moore, Henry, Henry, Lewis, and Cain with offices in Pulaski and Columbia where he continued practicing law until 1974 when the late Joe W. Henry was elected to a seat on the Supreme Court of Tennessee. In 1974, he formed the law partnership of Cain & Moore (later Cain, Moore & Peden) with the late Tom White Moore, Jr. In 1987, he was appointed by Governor Lamar Alexander as Circuit Judge of the 22nd Judicial District of Tennessee. In April 1998, he was appointed by Governor Don Sundquist to serve as Judge on the Tennessee Court of Appeals. In 2001, Judge Cain was named Appellate Judge of the Year by the Tennessee Division of the American Board of Trial Advocates.Judge Cain served as State Commander of the Tennessee American Legion from 1969 - 1970 and as Post Commander of Herbert Griffin Post #19. He remained an advocate for veterans by serving as a member of the American Legion National Legislative Commission for 27 years. In 2003, he received a Certificate of Continuous Membership for over 50 years of consistent loyalty and dedication to the ideals of The American Legion and for outstanding contributions to the programs of The American Legion.He also served as a delegate to the Tennessee Constitutional Convention in 1965 and as Columbia City Attorney from 1969 - 1973. He was a member of the Maury County Bar Association, Tennessee Bar Foundation, and American Bar Foundation.Judge Cain was a member of and past President of the Maury County Historical Society.He was a communicant of St. Peter's Episcopal Church for 44 years, former member of the Vestry, and Sunday School teacher.A gifted speaker, he generously shared this talent with many worthwhile community and state organizations. He had an appreciation of music, history, the works of Shakespeare and Winston Churchill, and in past years engaged in local theatre productions with his wife.He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Martha Sue Williams Cain of Columbia; a daughter, Elizabeth (Tracy) Moore of Columbia; a son, William "Will" Bryan Cain, Jr. of Columbia; four beloved grandchildren, David Moore, Bryan Moore, Rachel Cain, and Emily Grace Cain, all of Columbia; two sisters, Laura (Benny) Meers of Evans, Georgia and Dr. Geraldine (Dr. Gerald) Ellison of Tulsa, Oklahoma; a brother, Marshall (Hilda) Cain, Jr. of Alexandria, Virginia; an aunt, Annie Laura Barrett of Madison, Tennessee; a sister-in-law, Callie (George) Parkman of Ruston, Louisiana; four nieces and two nephews.Active pallbearers are Jerry C. Colley, Joe Henry, Jr., Bruce Peden, Billy Hix, Dr. Jim Kelley, Jesse Foreman, and Dr. John Dixon. Honorary pallbearers include Waymon Hickman, Sam Kennedy, Jack Craig, Beverely Douglas, Mike Greene, the Maury County Bar Association, members of the Tennessee Judiciary, members of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19, and staff of Hospice of the Highland Rim.
