William E. "Jack" Lovett, 92, former Maury County Sheriff and longtime resident of Turpin Circle, died Sunday, May 15, 2005 at Poplar Estates. Funeral services will be conducted at 4 p.m., Tuesday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with John Vaughan officiating. Burial will be in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the Tennessee National Guard. The family will visit with friends Tuesday from 2 - 4 p.m. at the funeral home. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a policeman for Columbia and Mt. Pleasant before serving three terms as Maury County Sheriff from 1952 until 1958. He was a member of Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19, La Societe 40 & 8 Voiture 1394, the Fraternal Order of Police, and the Tennessee Law Enforcement Organization. He was a member of Highland Church of Christ. Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years, Pauline "Polly" Dawson Lovett of Columbia; six nieces, Jackie King Bell, and Beth (Bill) Gregory both of Franklin; Kathy (Randy) Higgs and Katie Higgs both of Columbia, Jennifer Gregory of Nashville, Teresa (Roy) Wilson; ten nephews, John (Betty) Lovett, Dorris (Billie) Lovett, Todd Lovett, Cody Higgs, Dawson Higgs all of Columbia, Jacob Gregory and Jackson Gregory both of Franklin, Phil Dawson, Todd Dawson and Brett Dawson all of Atlanta, Georgia. He was preceded in death by two brothers, L.C. Lovett and Buford Lovett. Pallbearers will be John Lovett, Randy Higgs, Cody Higgs, Darrell Higgs, Tony Brown, and Bill Gregory. Honorary pallbearers will be Jim Bailey, Judge Lee Bailey, Bill Smith, Frank Dawson, Horace Dawson, Dr. Gaylon Harris, and residents and employees of Poplar Estates.
