William Howell Elliott

William Howell "Bill" Elliott, 94, died Tuesday November 11, 2008 at Maury Regional Medical Center.Funeral services were conducted Saturday, at 11:00 a.m. at Highland Church of Christ with Curtis Dowdy and Wayne B. Hardison officiating. Burial was in Polk Memorial Gardens. The Columbia native was born November 3, 1914 to the late Mary Anna Gray and John William Elliott. Mr. Elliott retired from the National Carbon and Carbide Company of Columbia in the late fifties. He served as an elder of the Highland Avenue Church of Christ for more than thirty years. He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps in Milton, Florida and after moving back to Columbia in the early thirties, served in the Tennessee National Guard.Mr. Elliott was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Rosa Elliott; his first wife, Louise Morrow Elliott to whom he was married for 52 years, died in 1987. Mr. Elliott's two daughters are from his first marriage. In 1989 he married Eleanor Blalock Wiley who died in 1995.Survivors include his wife, Betty Jean Cothron Elliott, whom he married in 1997; two daughters, Eleanor (Bobby) Riddle of Franklin, TN and Faye (Harold) Jackson of Springfield, TN; grandchildren, Robyn (David) Tarkington of Danville, KY; Elliott (Ginger) Jackson of Columbia, Leanne (Dwayne) Stubblefield, of Franklin, TN, Edie (Michael) Crosby of Ringgold, GA and Andy (Sheralee) Riddle of Murfreesboro, TN; two sisters-in-law, Gerline M. Gibson and Betty M. Fleming; 11 great-grandchildren; 3 great-great-grandchildren; and five step children.Pallbearers were grandsons, Elliott Jackson, Andy Riddle, David Tarkington, Dwayne Stubblefield, Michael Crosby and nephews, Danny Fleming, Foster Fleming III, Johnnie Hines, Mike Morrow, and Phil Lindsey. Honorary pallbearers included the Elders and Deacons of the Highland Church of Christ, Raymond Riddle, Jack Oakes, Ann Alexander, Brian Alexander, Ronald and Karen Cothron, Bill and Dianne Cothron, and Vance and Patsy Capley.
