William Herman "Bill" Gemmell

William Herman “Bill” Gemmell, 79, retired letter carrier and resident of Golf Club Lane, died Friday, November 2, 2018, at Maury Regional Medical Center.Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 10:00 A.M. at First Family Baptist Church with Dr. Steve Livengood, Rev. Rick Blevins, and Noel Willems officiating. Burial will follow in Polk Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Sunday from 3:00 – 7:00 P.M. at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home.The family suggests memorials to First Family Baptist Church Building Fund, 2790 Pulaski Highway, Columbia, TN 38401 or American Heart Association, P. Condolences may be extended online at www.oakesandnichols.com.Born February 2, 1939 in Pontiac, Michigan, he was the son of the late Clayton Campbell Gemmell, Sr. and the late Jessie Iona Anderson Gemmell. He was a 1957 graduate of Columbia Central High School and served in the U. S. Air Force from 1958 – 1962, stationed in Turkey. In his younger years, he was a truck driver with the Columbia Fire Department before beginning his thirty-plus year career with the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier. After retirement, he earned a degree in airplane mechanics from John Tune Airport. He was a member of the Maury County Gun Club where he had won several trophies as expert marksman. He was also a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers Branch #4, National Rifle Association, and Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. A former member and deacon of Pleasant Heights Baptist Church, he had more recently been a member of First Family Baptist Church and the Kimbrough Adult Sunday School Class.Survivors include his wife of fifty-five years, Kathleen Johns Gemmell whom he married April 5, 1963; daughter, Ginger Lynn Gemmell (Mickey) Mabry of Summertown; sister, Violet Watson of Lead Hill, Arkansas; grandchildren, James Howard Mabry, II of Summertown and Lauren Ashley Mabry (Zach) Long of Lawrenceburg; great granddaughter, Azlynn Mabry of Summertown; several nieces and nephews including, Betty Lou Watson Lail of Arkansas; Butch Watson and Donna Gemmell Oliver, both of Columbia; and sisters-in-law, Betty Jo Gilliam, Lorene Durham, and Irene Adams.He was preceded in death by a son, John Wayne Gemmell; brothers, Campbell Murray Gemmell, Clayton Campbell Gemmell, Jr., John Jesse Gemmell; niece, Linda Gemmell; and nephew, Clayton Gemmell.Active pallbearers will be Larry Nance, Tom Whitten, Gary Batey, Tommy Carroll, Zach Long, Bobby Adams, Bobby Chance, and Don McKee.Honorary pallbearers will include members of First Family Baptist Church Kimbrough Sunday School Class, members of Maury County Gun Club, and Noel Willems.
