WILLIAM B. SANDS Mr. William B. Sands, 78, retired self-employed carpenter and resident of Pickens Lane, died Saturday, October 26, 2002 at Veterans Hospital in Nashville. Funeral services will be conducted Monday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Johnny Mack Young officiating. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery with military honors at the graveside provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post #19.The family will visit with friends after 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. The Giles County native was the son of the late Bridges Sands and Nannie Braden Sands. He served in the U. S. Army from 1944 - 1946 during World War II. He earned the the Asiatic-Pacific Theatre of Operation Ribbon with one bronze star; Philippine Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star; Meritorius Unit Award; Army of Japanese Occupation Medal and a Victory Medal. Survivors include his wife, Mae Carlton Sands of Columbia and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by a son, William B. Sands, Jr. in 1969; two sisters, Norris Irwin and Virginia Schrader; and two brothers, Ralph B. Sands and Merle "Ben" Sands. Active pallbearers are Eddie Stewart, Terry Bratton, Raymond Sands, Frank Varnado, Braden Goldman and Jack Irwin. Honorary pallbearers are Marty Byrd and Yancey Carlton.
