Mr. William Reed "Bill" Turner, 94, retired educator, died Saturday, April 1, 2006 at his residence on Windermere Drive. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday at 2:00 p.m. at Oakes & Nichols with Rev. Jeff Jacob officiating. Burial will be in Glennwood Cemetery. Friends may visit Monday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the funeral home. He was a 1930 graduate of Hay Long High School. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from the University of Tennessee in 1933 and earned a master's degree in Arts and Education. Mr. Turner was retired as principal of Bearden High School in West Knoxville. While living in Knoxville, during summer months he taught Greek and Latin on the UT Knoxville campus. Active in civic affairs, he was a member of the Kiwanis Club of West Knoxville and served as club president in 1962. When he moved to Columbia he affiliated with the Columbia Kiwanis Club and was an over-50 year member of Kiwanis International.He was a member of First United Methodist Church and the Ayers-Whitney Sunday School Class. Mr. Turner loved reading, gardening and horticultural activites and was a member of the American Association of Retired Teachers.He was married June 6, 1937 to the former Frances Matthews. She preceded him in death Februrary 14, 2000.Survivors include a cousin, Donald (Betty) Lunn of Columbia and care-givers, Becky Whitehead, Katie and James Winchester and Mattie Winchester.He was preceded in death by three brothers, James Ephraim Turner, Thomas Poplin Turner and Jack Turner and a nephew, William "Bill" Turner.Active pallbearers are Joe Waddle, Aubrey Nelson, Charles Hendrickson, Ed Thomas, Homer Wiley, Ernest Allen, James Burt, Charlie Hinson and William "Bill" Hardison.Honorary pallbearers include Waymon Hickman, Houston Parks, Donna Waddle, Pheba Hardison, Doris Kibbons, Mary Porter Seale, Linda Barker, Judge Bobby Sands, Judge Robert and Tiny Jones, Dr. Thomas Dake, Dr. Anthony Khim, Staff of Hospice of the Highland Rim, Columbia Kiwanis Club and Ayers-Whitney Sunday School Class.
