William S Voss

William Spivey "Bill" Voss, 90, retired Maury County Sheriff and resident of Rolling Fields Circle, died Friday, December 14, 2007, at Maury Regional Hospital. Funeral services will be conducted at 3:30 P.M. Sunday at Oakes & Nichols Funeral Home with John Vaughan officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by Herbert Griffin American Legion Post 19. The family will visit with friends Saturday from 3:00 - 7:00 P.M at the funeral home. The Maury County native was the son of the late Eugene Voss and Bessie Fox Voss. He was first married to Nell Yokley Voss who preceded him in death in 1997 and later married Mary Marie Hammond Hanson Voss who survives. He was a 1937 graduate of Culleoka High School. He served in the U. S. Navy as a quarter master during World War II from November 1943 until December 1945. Mr. Voss served twenty years in the Maury County Sheriff's Department, ten of which he served as Maury County Sheriff. He was honored by the Tennessee Sheriff's Association as Outstanding Sheriff in 1984 and retired in 1986. He was a member of Graymere Church of Christ, the American Legion, Veteran of Foreign Wars, Fraternal Order of Police, Sheriff's Association, and U.S. Navy L.S.T. Association. In addition to his wife, he is survived by three stepchildren, Judy (Ed) Murphy of Columbia; Debbie (Ray) Holcomb of Spring Hill; Danny Neel (Patsy) Hanson of Lynnville; one brother, Hardin Voss of Columbia; five step grandchildren, Joel Murphy, Angela Bolton, John Hanson, Allison Hanson, Alicia Hanson; four step great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. He was preceded in death by eight brothers, Leslie Voss, Harold Voss, Dewey Voss, Chesley Voss, Clarence Voss, James Voss, Carl Voss, and Cecil Voss. Pallbearers will be his nephews, Carl Davis Voss, Tommy Voss, Jim Voss, Buddy Voss, Glenn Voss, Michael Bassett, Wayne Voss and Terry Voss.
